This change includes a new Universal Seat Pan installation that accommodates both Center and Dual Stick configuration installations and features a removable forward seat pan to improve access for autopilot servo installations, and installation & service of avionics sensor boxes or antennas. The removable Forward Seat Pan installs via piano hinge and includes cover plates for unused center stick or dual stick locations.

New B-Model kit orders can be upgraded with dual sticks for $760 and existing customers may retrofit their kit or flying aircraft via a $1,500 B-Model Dual Stick Retrofit Package. The Dual Stick installation represents a weight increase of approximately 2.25 lbs. vs. Center Stick Installation. Dual Stick B-Model Upholstery options are coming soon.

AeroConversions Rotax Attach Bars eliminate the need for expensive and complex Rotax ring mounts and Rotax mount rubbers. As a bed mount system, AeroConversions Rotax Attach Bars bolt directly to Rotax 912-series engines and are designed to use simple AeroConversions AeroVee Shock Mount Rubbers, eliminating the complex shock mount geometry found in other Rotax bed mount systems.

Rotax Attach Bars from AeroConversions weigh just 12.9 ounces each, and sell for $83.50 a piece. AeroConversions AeroVee Rubber Shock Mounts are sold in a set of 8 for only $28.

NKET Audits Sonex & Waiex B-Models and Xenos Quick Build Kit

Sonex Aircraft is proud to host the FAA’s National Kit Evaluation Team (NKET) this week, as they audit the new Sonex and Waiex B-Model kits, and the new Xenos Motorglider Quick Build Kit!

NKET evaluation is used to establish a kit’s compliance with Experimental Amateur Built aircraft “major portion” or “51 percent” rules. FAA NKET Amateur-Built Fabrication and Assembly Checklists for the new Sonex Aircraft kit offerings will be completed during this week’s visit, and once approved by the FAA, will be available for download from the FAA database. More information about the NKET process, along with links to current Sonex Aircraft kit checklists may be found on the Aircraft Certification Page of SonexAircraft.com. Once final checklists are posted by the FAA, Sonex Aircraft will notify customers and add links to the current listing.

Builders use these checklists to simplify the airworthiness inspection process for their completed aircraft. NKET checklists are especially important for kit sales in many foreign markets, where U.S. Experimental Amateur Built rules are often used as boilerplate definitions of their own regulations.

The NKET is once again using Sonex Aircraft to train new team members during this audit. Sonex hosted the very first organization and training exercises for the NKET in 2009, and participated in the ARC committee tasked with evaluating the EAB regulations, ultimately resulting in the NKET’s formation. In hosting this latest batch of NKET trainees, Sonex is proud to continue its leadership role in the future of the kit aircraft industry. NKET audits involve a very positive and collaborative process between kit manufacturers and NKET officials that ensure adherence to the Experimental Amateur Built aircraft rules while maximizing the manufacturers’ ability to provide a very complete kit. NKET officials work with kit manufacturers on-site to evaluate kits, and to conceptualize and evaluate kit packing list and and production part modifications when checklist item percentages exceed allowable limits. Sonex Aircraft once again congratulates the FAA and NKET members for the formation and administration of such a high-quality kit evaluation process.

Sonex and Waiex B-Models Unveiled:
Sonex Aircraft, LLC will be debuting the new B-Model design for Sonex and Waiex aircraft at Sun ‘n Fun 2016. A tailwheel, AeroVee Turbo powered Waiex-B will be officially unveiled during a press event on opening day of the show, Tuesday April 5th at 9:30am in the Sonex Aircraft booth, NE-11&29, and will be on-display throughout the show. This will be the public’s first opportunity to see the completed B-Model aircraft, as CAD renderings have only been released to-date. Sun ‘n Fun will also serve as the official opening of the Sonex and Waiex B-Model order book, as only placeholder Kit Reservation Deposits have been accepted thus-far. B-Model Tail Kits are available for immediate shipping. Full kits and other B-Model sub-kits will begin shipping in June.

The Waiex-B on-display at Sun ‘n Fun features an MGL Avionics iEFIS Explorer 8.5″ dual-screen avionics suite, continuing the long-standing relationship held by Sonex Aircraft and MGL. Dynon Avionics has also stepped-up to the plate with their own B-Model package: a dual-screen Dynon SkyView Quick Panel with Advanced Flight Systems Control Module integration. The exciting new B-Model Dynon package will be on-display in the Sonex Booth with a working mock-up panel. Additionally UL Power will be on-hand in the Sonex Booth to speak to prospective B-Model customers interested in the UL-350 series engines for their project, while the AeroVee Turbo will be prominently on-display on the aircraft. Milestones in pilot certification have also been passed, with 10 LOA’s issued to-date for the SubSonex design, which further cements a place for the SubSonex within FAA policy. “We have a great airplane that has been thoroughly tested, refined and well- proven,” continues Schaible, “an airplane that satisfies the wildest flying dreams of most pilots: to own and fly a little aerobatic jet ‘fighter.’ We need to make the dream a reality for more pilots, and get back to our ‘Reality Check’ roots by making this fantastic aircraft design attainable to more pilots.”

Sonex and Waiex B-Models have been enlarged by straightening of the forward fuselage sides, and feature improved creature comforts:

• More width and comfort at the shoulders, hips, knees and feet.
• Seat back is moved aft, and new seat geometry accommodates taller individuals.
• Staggered seating is available via upholstery seat back cushions.
• Center “Y-Stick” offers dual controls with easier cockpit entry and roomier seating.
• Electric Flaps reduce cockpit clutter and Dual Throttles are standard.

The enlarged B-Model instrument panel offers plenty of space for today’s popular dual-screen avionics installations (including the MGL iEFIS Explorer 8.5” displays) with room to spare. The new B-Model fuel tank holds 20 US gallons – a 4-gallon increase over the original Sonex and Waiex.

Sonex Aircraft is expanding engine options with the Sonex and Waiex B-Models, offering the same great firewall-forward support for AeroVee/AeroVee Turbo and Jabiru/CAMit 3300 engines, while adding engine mount options for UL Power 350i, 350is, and Rotax 912-series engines. A new universal cowl is designed to fit all 4 options.

B-Model kits will ship with more standard features, and will require less build time. Assembled Wing Spars and Machined Angle Components are now standard. Upgrades and accessories such as the AeroBrake Hydraulic Brakes, dual AeroConversions Throttle Quadrants, and AeroConversions Trim System are now included. Build time improvements include more laser-cut, formed and machined parts, machined canopy bows for easier installation with a better fit, an easy-fitting horizontal-split cowl, and engine mounts that bolt quickly and accurately to the airframe.

B-Models will completely replace the original model Sonex and Waiex in the Sonex Aircraft product lineup. New Sonex and Waiex original model kits will only be available for a limited time, however original model sub-kits will still be available to those needing to complete existing projects and legacy service parts will still be produced according to demand. B-Models will only be available in kit form, however, the original model Sonex plans will still be available to scratch builders.

Sonex and Waiex B-Model kits will be offered at an introductory price of $23,000 and refundable Kit Reservation Deposits are now available at $1,000 per reservation. Deposit holders will be placed in-line for B-Model kit delivery slots according to date and time of deposit. B-Model kit deliveries are estimated to begin in June, 2016. Customers seeking the earliest shipping opportunities may purchase a B-Model Tail Kit with their Kit Reservation Deposit, and they will be moved to the front of the line. Tail Kits will begin shipping in March.

Attendees of the upcoming February 27-28, 2016 Sonex Builders Workshop will enjoy the first opportunity to see the B-Model prototypes in-person as they are being constructed in the Sonex Research and Development facility. The Waiex B-Model prototype will be taken to Sun ‘n Fun 2016 for a public unveiling ceremony on Tuesday, April 5th at 9:30 am in the Sonex Aircraft exhibit booth (NE-11/29).
